First Baptist Church of Huffman had carried a vision for their campus for nearly fifty years. They had built the congregational support and raised the funds. What proved difficult was finding the right team to translate that vision into a building that actually worked for them.
When the pastor noticed one of our job sites and reached out, the church was already deep into planning with another design team. The existing design wasn’t delivering the clarity or confidence they needed to move forward. We evaluated what they had, listened to how their church actually functions, and restructured the plan around their real needs.
The result was a 16,470-square-foot Family Life Center that gave the church far more than the original design offered. Classrooms were reorganized for better flow and capacity. A full commercial kitchen was properly scoped to support their cooking ministry. The multipurpose gym was designed without fixed infrastructure so the space could serve Sunday worship overflow one week and host basketball, volleyball, or pickleball the next. The design-build model meant the church managed one contract and one relationship throughout.
A site infrastructure issue also surfaced during planning. The existing stormwater detention pond didn’t meet post-Harvey compliance standards, and new square footage triggered updated requirements. The pond was redesigned and relocated without interrupting the church’s services or weekly programming.
The project was completed on schedule and within budget. Change orders were minimal and entirely owner-directed.
Today the Family Life Center is in use nearly every day. The cooking ministry has expanded its reach, adult education has a dedicated home, and the gym supports programming the congregation never had the space for before. The church got what they set out to build — on time, within budget, and without compromise.
